Girls With Curls

Nothing makes me happier than to see women embracing and rocking their natural curls!  One of the reasons that women sometimes steer away from their curls is that they can’t get them under control.  Well the sooner that you accept that your curls have a mind of their own, the sooner you can start enjoying and having fun with your hair!

One of the things to remember is that every head of curly hair is different.  So what works for someone else may not work as well for you.  I am going to give you a few tips and tricks to help enhance your fabulous curls!
Now believe it or not, the styling process starts the minute you begin to shampoo your hair.  As a curly girl, I know that one of the biggest struggles can be the constant battle with frizz.  When you are washing your hair, I know that it feels great to scrub away at your scalp, but when you are dealing with curly hair you want to be a little more gentle.  The more you rough up your hair, the higher the chances are that it will frizz when it’s dry.  You want to gently massage your hair and scalp so you are not roughing up the cuticle, which is the outermost layer of each hair strand.  Choosing the right shampoo is so important!  Curly hair is naturally going to be more on the dry side.  So we want to use something that is going to be extra hydrating! Purelology recently came out with a curl line called Curl Complete.  The shampoo has a low lather formula which contains coconut oil.  I have used it myself and it left my hair feeling amazing!  It just looked healthier and had so much shine!  This shampoo is super gentle and gives your curls the moisture that it needs.
So after rinsing out the shampoo and you apply conditioner, this is when, and only when you should comb out your hair using a wide tooth comb.  Girls with curls never want to brush their hair!!  When you brush your hair, you are completely disturbing the curl pattern.  By doing this you are not allowing your hair to curl to its full potential.  Brushing will not only weaken the curl, but it will cause it to frizz as well.
Ok, so you have gotten all of the tangles out and rinsed the conditioner.  You never want to just wrap your hair up in a towel on the top of your head.  We want to do everything we can to enhance the curls we have.  While still in the shower, flip your head upside down and use a soft towel or even a soft cotton t-shirt to scrunch the water out of your hair.  This will get your curls to start forming before they begin to dry.
Now picking the right product can be tricky.  Someone with coarse tighter curls would benefit from using a cream.  For most people using a combo if products is what works best.  For this hair type, I like to pair up the Pureology Taming Butter, which helps smooth the cuticle while hydrating using coconut oil and soy bean oil, along with Living Proof Texture Spray.  The Texture Spray has a slight hold which helps keep your curls form nicely and stay put, without making them crunchy.  This is also great to use as a refresher throughout the day to give your curls a little pick me up!
Now someone with a more fine texture, might like the Pureology Curl Complete Uplifting Curl Spray.  This is a light weight spray gel which will help give your hair a little more bounce.  It has a weightless hold, so it wont drag your curls down!
Once you have found a product that you like, you can start drying your hair.  If you find that air drying works best for you than just let it be!  If you choose to use a dryer, it is super important that you use a diffuser so that the air flow is more controlled and isn’t blowing your hair all around.  Drying without a diffuser will most certainly cause it to frizz.
If after all of this your hair doesnt curl perfectly, do not stress over it!  once your hair is completely dry you can always touch up spots with a curling iron!
Just a few more words of advise…  I can not stress enough how important it is to keep those curls hydrated!  I suggest doing a mask once a week for extra moisture.  Pureology Moisture Melt Mast is going to give your hair the moisture that it craves?  Want to kick it up a notch?  Put the mask on your hair and then roll it up in a bun.  If you are someone who works out, leave it on during your workout.  The heat from your body will really allow the moisture to set in!!
Hopefully with these tips you are able to rock those sexy curls with confidence!!!
Happy Styling,
Jennifer Payne

About RIAH Hair Studio

How We Came to Be . . . RIAH Hair Studio In May 2011, the former Salon Rage of Southampton, Pennsylvania relocated to a new space and changed their name to RIAH Hair Studio. RIAH? (pronounced 'Rye-Ah') Yes, it's "hair" spelled in reverse. Donna originally established Salon RAGE in March 1999. The salon delivered comprehensive hair services to the surrounding communities. As a seasoned beauty industry professional for over 29 years, Donna believed in education, not only for her stylists, but for her clients as well. This prompted her to open this first salon where she could foster such a dynamic environment. After 10+ years in Southampton and a desire to move closer to her family, in 2011 she relocated her business to Furlong, Pennsylvania in the heart of Bucks County. Re-emerging as RIAH Hair Studio, Donna has created a modern, contemporary, urban loft design experience located on the corner of York Rd & Edison-Furlong Roads, at the Village Corner in Buckingham Township. RIAH Hair Studio is an intimate boutique salon that is relaxing, comfortable & social, providing the "Right Attitude" from the team resulting in a "Great Experience" for their clients. It's the "RAGE" she carefully develops to this day. The stylists are continually certified in the latest hair techniques (color, cut, design, styles, tools, products, and fashion trends). Their clients, female, male, young or mature, enjoy the benefits of this extensive training. Additionally, they are taught how to re-create and maintain their RIAH experience until the next appointment. It makes RIAH Hair Studio stand out as one of the most referred-to salons in Bucks County! When we have the opportunity to see you in our new space, we'll provide you with the "Right Attitude & Great Experience" as we have always strived to do.
