Meet the Team: Marissa Millevoi

marissa blog

Marissa is a natural presence around the salon. She is always smiling or laughing, socializing with clients, and let’s get real…she has the cutest clothes.

Hair was something Marissa had always thought about doing, but was unsure if it was really the path for her. Rather than question her choice and let it hold her back like many high school graduates, Marissa took a leap of faith and pursued her dreams. Boy, are we glad she did. Beauty school helped Marissa realize that this was certainly the right path for her, while her love for hair grew alongside her skill level. After graduating from the Bucks County School of Beauty Culture in Fall of 2008, Marissa began receptioning at RIAH until she could join the shampoo apprentice program and eventually moved her way up to the Advanced Stylist level she is at today.

When Marissa isn’t busy working two jobs, you may find her shopping, going up the mountains, skiing, or spending time with friends and being social.

Why Riah?

“It was such a beautiful salon and everyone knew about it who was locally in the industry”. Even before RIAH was born and we were still Salon Rage, the salon was well known in the area and everyone wanted to work here, especially Marissa.

“The entire time I was beauty school, I was thinking wow, I would love to work there”

How would…
You describe yourself in one word? Laid-back.
Your friends describe you in one word? Hard-working.

What’s your favorite technique to use on clients?
I love the blow-dry and the final finished look. The “final reveal” to the client is the most important part–that’s the way they’re gonna be walking out the door. I love seeing their reactions when they see their hair for the first time after i’m done.

“I want every client walking out the door feeling as amazing as they look”

Favorite Salon Memory?
“On our ten year anniversary, we cleared out the whole salon so it was empty and turned it into a huge celebration. It was a goodbye to the old salon before we moved and became RIAH. The most memories I have with the team are from that night. They’re the ones who have kept me here all this time; everyone is so great to work with.”

“A heat activated spray to create long-lasting, shiny, straight styles.”

Happy Monday!

Meet the Team: James Crego

James7

There is no way you could have a bad day hanging out with James. He is constantly laughing and smiling, bringing joy to every client at the salon for the past four years.

James began working at RIAH as a shampoo assistant when he graduated high school, and continued working through his education at Empire Beauty School in Warminster. Before long, James was on the floor as a stylist, bringing dedicated clients with him from beauty school and building a clientele at RIAH.

Born and raised in the Fox Chase neighborhood of Philly, James still lives in the same house he grew up in, 26 years later. He likes to plant his roots and commit to something–whether it be a place to live, friends, or his career.

James enjoys eating at new restaurants, being social with friends, and meeting new people. He loves activities in general–road trips, workout classes, hiking, wine tasting, you name it. James is always up for an adventure, and will make sure you look good doing it!

Why Riah?
The education program, and a great reputation are what first drew James to working at the salon. The amazing team that makes up the salon is what has kept him here.

Fourteen Lust-Worthy Looks for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is just a few days away. Are you ready? Here at the salon, we’ve been chatting away about our plans, whether we’re preparing for a romantic night with a loved one, or a romantic night with a bottle of wine.

Okay, so maybe more of us are celebrating the latter more than we want to admit. If you happen to find yourself in our boat, we have the most amazing team of stylists here to shoot your head with cupid’s arrow (so to speak) and give you that special new look you’re going to fall in love with.

Looking for a pop of color? This pink hue by Leah is the perfect way to add a little bit of love and a whole lot of style to your hair. We love how subtle yet unique it is.

Spring is the perfect time for changes and we love the drastic change Jenni made on Danielle’s hair. This dark-to-violet ombre look mirrors the shift from winter to spring and the angular cut perfectly compliments Danielle’s facial structure.

Remember hair chalk? It was SO 2015.
But seriously, once we had it in, we didn’t want it to wash out! Jacqueline is now the focus of our envy, with her gorgeous blonde locks now containing pops of purple and pink. We love that this style looks both edgy and girly.

For those of you looking for color without so much color, we have an example of the most beautiful balayage by Jen P. The color is so natural and sunkissed, it compliments the loose curls and laid-back cut SO well.

Have plans with that special someone on Saturday night or Sunday? Lucky you! We’ve been seeing tons of clients coming in hoping for a little help with their look for this weekend. Whether its a blowdry with a simple finish of curls, braids, or a sleek updo, we’ve got you covered on a variety of styles that are guaranteed to pull together your whole look.

Always remember you can ask your stylist for recommendations on what she/he thinks will look best on you!

Sometimes we need an outside party to really tell us what will look best and we love that our team really know how to make someone leave here looking and feeling like a million bucks.

Meet the Team: Sarah LaPorta

We can’t wait for you to learn more about beautiful, talented, outgoing Sarah!

sarah9

Sarah LaPorta has been at Riah for almost 8 years, but knew she first wanted to do hair when she was a little girl. She spent all of her time growing up braiding, styling, perming, and dying friends’ hair (although as a teenager, Sarah admit she didn’t always know what she was doing). Hard to believe now seeing what skill and precision she puts into her work as a Master Stylist.

sarah6

In high school, Sarah was a client at the previous location, Salon Rage, where she was encouraged to apply and work during her summer break from college. At the time, she was in nursing school at temple, but after working at the salon as a receptionist and then a stylist assistant/shampoo team member, she realized that becoming a stylist was truly the right fit for her. She began her journey down that path in 2010, officially becoming a stylist after graduating from Empire Beauty School.

Get to know Sarah:

Why Riah?
The team is Sarah’s favorite part about working at Riah. She likes coming to work and feeling like she’s working with family.

“I feel lucky to be learning from a talented group; having people to bounce ideas off of and motivate one another.”

How would…
You describe yourself in one word? Ambitious.
Your friends describe you in one word? Good-Listener.
Your clients describe you in one word? Personable.

What’s your favorite technique to use on clients?
Balayage and special occasion styles are the most fun.

What are your hopes for your career over the next five years?
“My hopes are to be an elite stylist, or maybe a salon owner. I’d love to educate as well. I’ve done some updo classes and color class in the past–it’s something I really enjoy doing on the side.”

Favorite salon product?
Currently, it’s EVO: Whip it Good.

“It gives amazing volume without being too sticky, and allows for that lasting blowdry finish.”

Meet the Team: Ereka Blomgren

In the first edition of our new “Meet the Team” series, we’re excited to introduce you to a newer face at the salon, Ereka Blomgren.

ereka

“I love seeing my clients leave feeling secure and confident in their own natural beauty.”

IMG_2154

Ereka first knew she wanted to become a hair stylist while in college. She realized college wasn’t the right path for her so she did what any sensible young adult would do: she made a list. What was at the top of that list? Hair styling of course! She immediately decided to go with her gut and go to beauty school. Being a girl who was born in the Midwest and grew up in Doylestown, she loved going to school in the city. It gave her the opportunity to learn how to do all types of hair–a skill she will use throughout her entire career. After graduating from Jean Madeline Aveda Academy, Ereka got her first job at Aveda Spa in Doylestown, before moving to Washington DC to really train and prepare herself for success in her career in cosmetology. Five years later, she moved back to Bucks County to be closer to friends and family.

Ereka began working at Riah in the beginning of November and has been lighting up the salon with her infectious smile and go-getter attitude ever since. Call the salon at (215) 953-0622 to schedule an appointment with Ereka today!

Get to know Ereka:

Why Riah?
Initially, Ereka wanted to work at Riah for an opportunity to grow in the business in a place with a prestigious reputation. She was pleasantly surprised how welcoming her co-workers are and now couldn’t imagine herself in any other salon family!

How would…
You describe yourself in one word? Grateful.
Your friends describe you in one word? Loyal.
Your clients describe you in one word? Down-to-Earth.

What’s your favorite technique to use on clients?
“I love to blow dry and style my clients hair to create a finished look.”
Seeing her clients walk out the door feeling 100% confident in themselves is Ereka’s priority as a stylist.

5 Ways To A Smooth Frizz Free Summer

With summer right around the corner, that means that humidity is days away from showing its ugly face!  I know that we are all excited for warmer weather, but not quite ready to begin the endless battle with frizz.  So today I am going to give you 5 sure-fire ways to a smoother summer.

The first frizz fighter that I am going to talk about is something that I personally could not live without, and that is the Keratin Treatment.  I am sure that some of you have heard of this, but maybe aren’t exactly sure how it works.  A Keratin Treatment is a smoothing treatment.  Not to be confused with a relaxer or straightening treatments, which actually change the texture of your hair permanently.  A keratin treatment is designed to reduce frizz and soften curl.  It is made up of protein so it actually is making the hair stronger.  So if you are someone who has curly or frizzy hair that spends a ton of time, energy, and heat trying to make your hair look smooth, just to go outside and have it frizz right back up, this treatment is calling your name!  The keratin will take away all frizz and will cut the drying time by at least half!  The best part about this treatment is you are not married to it.  By that I mean it gradually washes out of hair.  So you are not left with hair that is two different textures as it grows in.  This treatment lasts about four months, just long enough to get you through the humid summer.  After about four months your hair will return completely back to its natural state, except it will be stronger and healthier.  This treatment starts at 300$ based on the length of your hair.  So if you break it down, that’s 75$ a month or roughly 19$ a week.  Trust me when I say that it is well worth the investment!

Now the second frizz fighter that I am going to talk about is also a type of keratin, but look at it as the Keratin Treatment’s little sister.  This is the Keratin Express Blowout.  It is a lighter version of the full keratin.  This treatment is designed more to reduce frizz and not so much curl.  This treatment is more suited for someone who doesn’t have super curly hair, someone who just wants to remove frizz and make their hair less “puffy”.  This treatment lasts about six weeks, and costs 100$.  Just like its big sister, the Keratin Express is a protein so it will help strengthen your hair, while also adding crazy shine!

The  third frizz fighter I am going to suggest is a gloss.  This treatment is great for everyone!  It is a quick way yo put that youthful shine back into your hair.  A gloss will help smooth the cuticle (the outer most layer of hair) leaving the hair softer and more conditioned.  A gloss is great to have done in between color services to help give the color a little boost, helping your hair look and feel great until your next visit!  When my hair is feeling dull and dry, I like to have a gloss done.  It makes my hair easier to style and eliminates a ton of frizz!  This is a quick 30$ service that can have you in and out of the salon in a half hour.  You can leave with is wet, or schedule a blowout for an additional fee.  With the right at home care, you should be able to get four weeks out of your gloss!

Ok, the fourth frizz fighter is something that you can have done in the salon and maintain at home.  I’m talking about conditioning treatments.  One of the biggest culprits of frizzy hair is lack of moisture.  You can have treatments done in the salon for around 30$.  A great way to maintain the moisture at home is by doing a mask on your hair once a week.  You would use the mask in place of your conditioner and leave it on for about tem minutes before rinsing it out.  The longer you leave it in, the better.  The healthier and more hydrated your hair is, the better the chances are of it staying smooth.  Our salon carries a great selection of masks, so stop in any time and one of our stylist would happily help choose the right mask for your hair!

Lastly I am going to talk about products.  If you are not using anything in your hair before styling, it is time to start.  You always want to use some type of product before blowing your hair out.  There needs to be some sort of protection from the heat, even if it’s just a leave-in conditioner.  Since every head of hair is different, the product selection will be different for everyone.  Riah offers such a wide variety of products.  So if you are in the area, please stop in and allow one of our professionals to consult with you about what products would best suit you!  The right styling products can make all of the difference when it comes to frizz control!!

Hopefully with these tips, you are able to have a smooth, frizz-free summer!

Happy Styling,

Jennifer Payne
